Local Activities

Since 1896, EPH has been providing vital resources to low-income and immigrant families in the Boston and Somerville area. Our mission is to provide the tools needed to help these families reach their fullest potential, and to do this, we offer a range of services which include early childhood education, youth development, and family assistance. Every donation we receive goes directly to our programs and operating costs, and we are very thankful for the generous support of our community partners, neighbors, families, and supporters. With their help, we are able to continue our mission of empowering and strengthening our community.

The Kennedy Pool is open to the public during designated hours. Both recreational and lap swimmers are welcome. Lifeguards are on duty during all public swims, and a snack bar is open during the summer months. The Somerville Recreation Department offers a wide range of programming for the Kennedy Pool. Swimming lessons are available for all ages, and the website has more information about the activities offered. Whether you're a novice swimmer or an experienced lap swimmer, the Kennedy Pool has something for everyone.

At the Somerville Recreation Department, parents and children alike can find plenty of fun and engaging activities. There are a variety of programs to choose from, such as sports, arts, and educational classes. In 1976, Communities for People (CFP) was founded to address the needs of youth in Massachusetts who had been in trouble. Realizing that living in the community was more beneficial than residing in institutions, CFP created community-based residential programs. Four years later, CFP expanded its services to Rhode Island. In 1993, CFP merged with Integrated Foster Care and in 1997 with Special Adoption Family Services. These two mergers broadened the services CFP could offer, allowing for more comprehensive support. Additionally, CFP collaborated with The Providence Center to create Placement Solutions, which managed the services for the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF). In 2010, Placement Solutions became an independent entity. Through their innovative and comprehensive programs, CFP has been able to make a positive impact on the lives of troubled youth. By providing residential programs and a continuum of services, CFP has been able to help vulnerable individuals receive the support they need to reach their full potential.

Julie, the founder of TLC, has been a leader in the childcare and education field and has fought for the implementation of multi-age classrooms for decades. This is something many parents can relate to, as having had grown up in a large family themselves, the benefits of a multi-age environment are evident. It wasn’t until 25 years ago, however, that the idea of uniformity in age was the norm in early learning environments. Through Julie’s leadership and persistence, TLC and other childcare centers have been able to provide children with a unique learning and care experience, one that encourages growth and nurtures connection.

, established in 2015, is a Wildflower Network School, an innovative approach to Montessori education started by the Social Computing Group at the MIT Media Lab. At Dandelion Montessori, our mission is to provide an inclusive and diverse learning environment for children ages 2.9 through 6 years. We strive to create a collaborative community of learners, educators, and families that fosters the growth of the whole child on their journey to becoming peaceful, powerful, and purposeful human beings. Our school is a part of the Wildflower Network, a revolutionary approach to Montessori education created by the Social Computing Group at the MIT Media Lab.

At ABC Daycare, our doors open at 7:15 am and close at 5:30 pm. We provide a nutritious breakfast, offering a selection of cereals with soy milk to get the day started. Our curriculum is tailored to the individual needs and interests of each child. We offer a variety of activities that foster learning in areas such as art, science, music, mathematics, phonics, and reading, as well as developing fine and gross motor skills, self-help skills, and social and emotional skills. In the summer of 2013, Marina Seevak acted on an idea she had been considering for years. She set up shop at the Artisan's Asylum, a maker space in the Boston area, and contacted local manufacturers to see if they were willing to save their industrial scrap material for her. Her mission was to provide teachers with treasures from the scrap piles, and to create a small creative reuse center. With a background in the Boston Children's Museum and the Cambridge Public Schools, Marina was familiar with the concept of recycling. Years ago, as a first grade teacher, she often visited the RECYCLE Center to gather materials for her classroom's 'junk' center. Now, inspired by her past experiences, she was ready to make her idea a reality.
