As many of us know, Native Americans were the first farmers of our land. Native women were particularly influential, leading their villages and demonstrating amazing agricultural skills. They showed newly arriving English settlers how to grow corn, beans, and squash, as well as to gather cranberries. The tribes moved seasonally between established hunting, fishing, and growing/gathering sites. Today, students of all ages have the chance to learn about nutrition and the life cycle of plants and animals through field trips and summer work. People of all abilities can participate in meaningful work and contribute to their community. Thousands of students, volunteers, and community members have now been introduced to the importance of productive open space, organic agriculture, and supporting local farms and farmers. It’s thanks to the Native American’s pioneering agricultural practices that we are now able to enjoy the fruits of their labor.
