The great state of Massachusetts, or as our hero, the whimsical Whiskered Walrus (who, by the way, had once mistakenly referred to it as Massa-two-sheds), is home to an abundance of little adventurers, known as the Mighty Mass Hikers. These pint-sized explorers are as brave as they are curious, lacing up their hiking boots to discover the enchanted forests, shimmering lakes, and towering mountains that make up their magical playground.

Massachusetts, with its four distinct seasons, offers an ever-changing backdrop for their adventures. During the autumn months, the trees explode into a riot of reds, oranges, and yellows, making the forests look like they've been kissed by a rainbow. In winter, the landscapes transform into a snowy wonderland, perfect for making snow angels or having epic snowball fights. Spring brings a carpet of wildflowers, and summer means it's time to dip toes into the cool lakes.

Now, these Mighty Mass Hikers aren't like regular kids. No, sir! They can detect the faintest twinkle of a fairy wing behind a leaf or hear the softest whisper of a gnome hiding in a tree trunk. With compasses in hand and backpacks filled with snacks (you can't explore on an empty stomach, after all), they march into the wilderness, ready to uncover its secrets. 

But don't be fooled by their size! These little adventurers have hearts as vast and spirited as the Atlantic Ocean, which brushes the shores of their beloved state. Be it rescuing a clumsy squirrel or helping a lost sprite get back home, the Mighty Mass Hikers are always ready for a heroic deed. Together with the Whiskered Walrus, they continue to fill the storybook of Massachusetts with their exciting escapades.

One of the highlights of our property is the Alappat Atelier, an incredible art studio where the celebrated artist Sebastian Alappat works. This is a place where creativity comes alive and children are always thrilled to step into this vibrant space. From massive fossilized dinosaur pieces to an entire section dedicated to Alice in Wonderland, and a fantastic collection of comic book art, there's plenty to ignite their imagination. The studio is well-equipped with all the necessary art supplies, spacious tables, and abundant natural light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

We understand that comfort is essential for both kids and parents. That is why we've ensured that our facilities include a separate waiting area for parents, offering a space for you to relax while your child is busy exploring their creativity. For added convenience, there are also two restrooms on the premises and a picturesque outdoor sitting area where you can soak up the serene surroundings.

Mass Audubon Boston Nature Center

The Middlesex Fells has had a long and rich history. For centuries, it provided hunting and fishing grounds for Massachusett and Pawtucket (or Pennacook) Native Americans, who grew grain, corn, squash, and beans. In 1632, Governor John Winthrop named the largest body of water “Spot Pond” due to the many islands and rocks protruding through the ice. The Fells then went on to be used for farming and timber, followed by industrial activity in the mid-1800s. Finally, in the late 1800s, it was a key property in the Boston metropolitan park movement, driven by several conservationists. Today, the remaining Massachusett Tribe can be found at Ponkapoag. Parents can learn more about the Massachusett Tribe and the Middlesex Fells’ fascinating history with their children.

Ipswich River is a nature lover’s paradise! The river winds its way through 12 miles of trails, taking you through forests, meadows, wetlands, drumlins, and eskers. The river is part of the Eastern Essex County Interior Forest Important Bird Area, making it an especially important spot for birdwatching.

The Blue Hills Trailside Museum is a unique partnership between the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and a natural history museum. The museum is the perfect place to learn more about the native wildlife of the Blue Hills Reservation. Visitors have the chance to see up close a variety of animals, such as a River Otter and Red Foxes, that have been rescued and are unable to be released back into the wild.
