In 1968, Wilmette residents narrowly voted down a referendum that would have created a swimming pool, children's park, bath house/warming house, natural ice rink and toboggan hill in Community Playfield. However, the acquisition of the land that is now Centennial Park led to the construction of a sports complex facility instead. This facility now includes a pool, eight indoor tennis courts and two indoor ice rinks. With the addition of these amenities, Wilmette residents have access to an array of sports and recreational activities and facilities to meet their needs.
