In the sunshine-soaked state of Florida, where palm trees sway like dancing ballerinas and oranges fall from trees like tiny sunsets, there exists a band of wild-eyed, straight-shooting, arrow-slinging children. These kids, known far and wide as the 'Bowstring Buccaneers', are the finest archers from Miami to Tallahassee, their arrows whistle through the air faster than a thunderbolt!

The leader of this quirky crew is a tall, lanky boy named Freddie 'Fletch' Fletcher. With a mop of flaming red hair and freckles scattered across his nose like the Milky Way, Fletch is as funny as a flamingo doing the floss. Imagine if Robin Hood and a flamingo had a wild, hilarious baby – that would be Fletch. His arrows don't just fly; they whizz through the air, crackling with energy, zipping by startled flamingos, and hit the bullseye so hard it screams for mercy!

But it's not all serious shooting for these Bowstring Buccaneers. They celebrate each bullseye with a whoop that echoes through the Floridian marshlands and high-five with their bows. They even have a secret handshake that involves a lot of elbow-twisting, bow-twirling, and ends in an explosion of giggles.

So, if ever you find yourself in Florida, where the sun always shines brighter than a blushing orange and silly seagulls play tag with the waves, listen for the whooshing whistle of an arrow and the laughter of the Bowstring Buccaneers. You never know, they might just let you join their band of merry, arrow-slinging adventurers!

Parents in the Riverview and Gibsonton areas can rejoice! The Spurlino Family Y is now open and ready for family fun. This brand new YMCA opened its doors back in January 2019 and is LEED Gold Certified. The Hillsborough County Planning Commission even awarded the building with a design award in Fall 2019.

The Spurlino Family Y offers a safe and fun environment for adults and children alike. Kids can join the reading club for little ones, or take part in the youth sports and swim lessons offered. Take a trip to Chinsegut Conservation Center Tract, located only six miles north of Brooksville. Explore the 408 acres of the 850-acre Chinsegut Wildlife and Environmental Area. Learn about the area’s history and how it is connected to one of Brooksville’s notable early residents. 

The Chinsegut Conservation Center Tract is managed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and is funded by the Pittman-Robertson Program and state legislative appropriations. Founded in 2009, we have seen a great deal of growth in the number of programs and participants, and recently moved to a larger and better location. Our efforts have resulted in a beneficial impact on the community, with more than 20,000 members of the City of Sweetwater benefitting from our programs. 

We provide not only recreational and educational programs, but also scholarships to help those in our community reach their full potential. Our scholarship program for children offers the opportunity for them to attend Belen Jesuit Preparatory School from 6th to 12th grades. We also offer scholarships for adults to attend Florida International University, with up to 5 years of tuition covered.
