With the energy of a sugar-rushed squirrel, they'd zip down the beach, practicing their cheers and stunts, their voices rising above the seagulls squawking, making even the grumpiest of sea crabs crack a smile. The leader of this bouncy band was a girl named Cali. Now, Cali was genuinely something else. The Livermore Area Recreation and Park District (LARPD) is a valuable organization that has been serving the Livermore Valley for over 70 years. Established in 1947, when the public voted to create the District, LARPD is now governed by a five-person, elected Board of Directors, each of whom serves a four-year term. The District covers an area of 245 square miles, bounded by Contra Costa County to the north, San Joaquin County to the east, Santa Clara County to the south and Cities of Pleasanton and Dublin to the west. LARPD provides a wide array of services to the community, from neighborhood parks, ranging from two to twelve acres in size, to community parks with equestrian centers, sand-based all-weather soccer fields, and soccer and ball fields, to open space parks totaling 1,360 acres and special-use parks. LARPD also provides school-aged child care to youth at all eleven Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District elementary schools, community classes, youth and adult sports, aquatics, environmental education, and senior services and special events throughout the year.
