Parents Magazine celebrates Josefina Almonte and her founding of J & L NEXT/GEN (formerly known as JLDC) in 1992. With her living room as her first classroom, Josefina shared her talent and passion for Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and Flamenco with her family members and friends. Over the years, she has also offered Hip Hop, Acrobatics, and Contemporary classes to her students. Josefina’s dedication to her craft is evident in her annual dance recital that rivals Broadway shows. With beautiful costumes, award-winning choreography, and spectacular scenery, it is truly an awe-inspiring event. Parents Magazine is proud to recognize the hard work and dedication of Josefina Almonte and her commitment to bringing the art of dance to her students and community through J & L NEXT/GEN.

Ballet

Ballet is an artistic dance form performed to music using precise and highly formalized set steps and gestures. Classical ballet, which originated in Renaissance Italy and established its present form during the 19th century, is characterized by light, graceful, fluid movements and the use of pointe shoes. Ballet takes strength, power, flexibility, grace, musicality, structure, and above all of that, you have to make it look effortless. Unlike other forms of exercise, in ballet you have to engage every part of your body, be aware of every part of your body and have control over every part of your body. In other words, ballet requires you to think as well as move.

Contemporary

Contemporary dance is a dance performance genre that developed during the mid twentieth century and has since grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and Europe. Contemporary dance tends to utilize both the strong and controlled legwork of ballet and modern dance's stress on the torso, and also employs contract-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation characteristic of modern dance. Unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and direction are often used, as well.

Acrobatics

Acro dance is a style of dance that combines classical dance technique with precision acrobatic elements. It is a popular dance style in amateur competitive dance as well as in professional dance theater and in contemporary circus productions such as those by Cirque du Soleil. Acro is an especially challenging dance style for dancers as it requires them to be trained in both dance and acrobatic skills. Acro dancers must be in excellent physical condition as well, because acro is a physically demanding activity. Acrobatic training teaches, flexibility, balance, strength, muscle control, and above all discipline and concentration. Basic tumbling skills can be an added bonus for any dancer. With careful, quality instruction a dancer will gain more flexibility and upper body strength giving him/her a substantial advantage in today’s demanding choreography.
