Every morning at the crack of dawn, right as the sun begins to play peek-a-boo with the mountains, the dojo doors swing open and in tumble the Karate Cuties. Leading the pack is our hero, the Karate Kangaroo, Kiko. Kiko, with his marsupial moves and black belt in belly laughs, is the heart and soul of the Mighty-Mass dojo. He hops around in his red bandana, teaching the kids the art of the ‘Kangaroo Kick’ and the secret of the ‘Pouch Punch’. With Kiko, every karate lesson is a belly-busting adventure. You'll find the Karate Cuties rolling on the floor, not from Kiko's kicks, but from fits of laughter. But don't let those giggles fool you. When it’s time to get serious, these kids transform into mini karate masters, their faces focused, their moves swift and precise. With Kiko cheering on, they break boards and the stereotype that karate is just about fighting. Heron's Bridge/Valley Women's Martial Arts has been a non-profit, collaboratively led, member oriented school and community center since 1977, offering multi-disciplinary arts education based in feminist social justice activism. Founded with the goal of encouraging transformation, accessibility, and inclusion, their mission is to provide instruction in martial arts, movement meditation, empowerment skills, self-protection and self-care strategies, healing and peace-building methods, interpretive dance, poetry, and more. HB/VWMA welcomes participants of any gender, physical/mental ability, race, creed, ethnicity, socio-economic background, sexual orientation, and body size. Program fees are on a sliding scale basis, ensuring that no one is excluded from taking part in these important programs.
