Karate has a long and storied history, dating back to the 18th century when it was first conceived as a mix of Chinese and Okinawan martial arts. The original “proto-karate” was divided into three major schools, Shuri-te, Naha-te, and Tomari-te, named after the cities in Okinawa where they originated. Over time, these schools have been innovated and expanded upon with new styles emerging as a result of the influence of Chinese martial arts and the expertise of its masters.
